Catching Suspended Walleye and Sauger
Walleye can often be found suspended for a number of reasons.
Temperature, oxygen, food and toxic gases all play a role in why
walleyes suspend. Some walleye will move laterally rather than
vertically to avoid drastic temperature changes.
They might suspend 15 feet down in 25 feet of water and move to 50
feet of water, but still only be 15 feet down. Walleye will suspend along
the thermocline in the summer because it is the coldest water with
oxygen. If they go deeper, there won’t be enough oxygen to survive.
At times, toxic gases form along the bottom from the decomposition of
organic bottom sediments. Walleye will also suspend under schools of
bait fish in open water. They love to feed on shad and ciscoes and
these bait fish will often suspend in open water.
Many anglers have a tough time fishing for suspended walleye. It can
be so tough that some walleye anglers refuse to fish for suspended
walleyes. Walleye usually suspend in areas to rest or feed. If there are
schools of bait fish just above the walleye, the walleye are there to
feed. They will be extremely aggressive. You should use fast-moving
baits such as crankbaits and minnow plugs. If you find suspended
walleye on the fish finder, but there aren’t any bait fish, those walleye
are most likely there to rest. You will have a very tough time getting
these fish to bite.
