Catching Walleye and Sauger in Clear Water

Fishing for walleye in crystal, clear lakes can be very
frustrating.  Walleye can be found in 5 feet of water early
in the morning, late in the evening and throughout the
night.  During the day, these same fish will be found in
water as deep as 20 to 50 feet.  Fishing with light line is a
must when fishing in clear water.  You can double your
strikes by using 4 pound line instead of 8 or 10 pound
    line.

On calm, sunny days, most anglers don’t even fish during the day because it will be very tough.  If you can get out on the water during a cloudy day or a
day with a light wind, fishing will be better.  A small chop on the water (from the wind kicking up the waves) is usually best for walleye fishing.  Try fishing at
night to increase your odds of catching fish in clear water.  Successful anglers completely change how they fish to avoid spooking fish.  They make long
casts instead of vertical jigging.  When trolling, anglers will let out 50 to 100 feet more line than they typically let out.  Some anglers only fish at night
during the summer.  Others use slip bobbers with a single hook instead of a jighead.  It is so important to make your bait appear as natural as possible
because clear water walleye are very picky.
