Ice Fishing for Sunfish
More anglers catch sunfish than any other type of fish during the winter. Fishing is best in early winter and just before ice out. You can find fish in the same areas you found them during the fall for the early part of winter and just before ice out. Lots of fish are in 8 feet of water or less. In mid-winter, most fish will be in 10 to 20 feet of water and sometimes deeper.
Similar baits that you used during the open water season will work when ice fishing. Most anglers use jigs tipped with live bait. Grub worms, a sliver of cut bait and small worms are great for tipping jigs. Using tip-ups over a large area will help you locate the fish. Once you start catching fish in a certain hole, drill other holes close by and try some vertical jigging or bobber fishing. Both methods will work.
