As the water warms, fish will move into open water anywhere from 15 to 50 feet deep. They are much harder to find, however, if you find them you can catch some fish. Many fishermen have binoculars in the boat and they look for a flock of seagulls circling and dive-bombing the water. The seagulls are feeding on the shad and the shad are being chased to the surface by stripers, white bass or hybrids. If you find circling seagulls, you found some fish. Get over there as fast as you can for exciting action. Try targeting shallow flats near deep water in the morning and evening to find fish in the summer. If you consistently fish these areas at the right times, you will find yourself in the middle of active schools with birds dive- bombing the water for shad. This is some of the most exciting fishing you can get into.
In the fall, you can find fish chasing schools throughout the entire day. Morning and evening are still the best times to fish, but many anglers find active schools feeding on the surface throughout the day as well. In late fall and winter, fishing slows down tremendously. If the water falls below 50 degrees, fishing is tough. In the southern states winter can be an excellent time to catch fish because the water is still warm enough for them to actively feed.
