Catching Smallmouth Bass in Dark Water
Smallmouth prefer clear water, but they do live in some waters that are
dark and murky. These fish are going to be found in shallow water
most of the time. Depths of 5 to 10 feet are where most smallmouth are
found in dark water lakes, reservoirs, rivers or streams. You don't have
to fish early morning or evening to catch fish in dark water.
Throughout the day provides most of the action because the bass have
more visibility during this time. Night fishing is usually terrible as well as
just before sunrise and just after sunset. Large, slow baits work best.
Spinnerbaits and jigs are most popular in dark water, but shallow
crankbaits can also catch lots of smallmouth.
