Catching Smallmouth Bass around Dams and Spillways
Fishing dams and spillways will produce lots of smallmouth bass.
Smallmouth will make runs up rivers and streams in the spring and fall.
Fishing can be excellent during both times of the year. In the spring,
they are swimming upstream to spawn and they get stuck at the dam.
On good smallmouth rivers, you can see anglers all along the dam,
with waders on, trying to catch smallmouth. Lipless crankbaits, jigs
and live bait work best around dams. The noise of a crankbait allows
them to find the lure easier which will help you catch more fish.
Spillways are smaller areas that dump water into the river or stream.
Some areas could be very small, but still produce some quality fish.
These areas are best after heavy rains.
When fishing for smallmouth bass around spillways, you don't have as
many options as you do when fishing for largemouth. Largemouth
bass are in all types of ponds and there are spillways in lots of these
ponds, especially ponds in a subdivision. Smallmouth don't live in
most of these ponds, so these spillways will obviously not produce
smallmouth. If you have a lake with good smallmouth bass fishing and
a spillway, you need to be fishing the spillway after heavy rains.
