The redfish is found from southern New Jersey to Florida and all across the Gulf Coast. You
can catch redfish off shore or fairly close to shore from a boat. Fish over 70 pounds have been caught, but most fish are in the 5 to 15 pound range.
Catching Redfish
In the Outer Banks, redfish are caught in the surf, along the outer bars, sounds and bays. Anglers will also sight fish for schools of redfish along the outer bars. Redfish will school up in the spring making sight fishing very exciting. You will actually be able to see a dark shadow moving along that consists of over a dozen or more bass.
In the southern part of their range and along the Gulf Coast, sight fishing is very popular for redfish around channel edges and mud banks. Redfish congregate in these areas during the high tide.
Redfish can be caught with menhaden or mullet on a bottom rig. Crab and shrimp will also work as well as any artificial lure that imitates a crab or shrimp. Redfish are very tasty; however, the smaller fish taste much better than the larger fish. Most anglers release the larger fish and keep the smaller fish.
