| Catching Perch in Open Water Catching perch in open water can be a lot more difficult than catching spawning perch. Once the perch are done spawning, they move to deeper, open water. They will school up during this time, but they can be in many different spots. A mayfly hatch might draw them to shallower, mucky bottoms, while schools of bait fish could draw them to water that is as deep as 35 feet. The best way to find perch in open water is to use your fish finder. Once you locate a school of fish on your graph, drop your baits down and see if they are perch. Vertical jigging with jigs and jigs tipped with live bait will produce some good results. Other anglers prefer drifting in open water with live bait or jigs. Drifting can be a good way to find active schools of perch. Once you find them, drop anchor and keep your baits right above them. |
