The Pacific bonito is a different species from the Atlantic bonito, but there are many similarities
between the two. Pacific bonito are smaller with most fish in the 6 to 8 pound range. They can be found inshore or offshore. Most anglers target these fish inshore off of the rocky California shorelines and along the kelp beds in southern California.
Catching Pacific Bonito
These fish are known for schooling and they will attack schools of bait fish such as sardines, anchovies and other small fish. When schools of Pacific bonito attack a school of bait fish, you want to be close by. You can see hundreds of bonito chasing fish to the surface at once.
Chumming for bonito is very effective especially along the kelp. Once you attract a few bonito, dozens more will come along to see what’s going on in the area. Small baits and small lures are a must when fishing for bonito. Spoons and jigs are the top lures to use for bonito. Some anglers troll for bonito. When trolling, you should target these fish closer to the bottom with a trolling sinker. If you see fish surfacing, most fishermen prefer anchoring and casting for the active, feeding fish.
