Finding large pike consistently is much harder. They can be found shallow early in the year and also in the fall, but they will be much deeper throughout the summer. Successful pike fishermen target large pike in 20 to 40 feet of water in the summer. Deep drop-offs along points or near weed lines will hold big fish. Deep water close to shallow humps will also hold big pike.
Finding muskies in lakes can be somewhat harder than finding pike because they are not around in the same numbers as pike. Muskie don’t move around as much as pike so when you spot a big one, return to that area on a later date and you’ll have a chance to catch that fish. You can find muskie in most of the same areas that you find pike in lakes, however, they will also be around wood. Muskie like wood much more than pike. Fallen trees along a deep-sloping shoreline are ideal spots for muskie. Big muskie do prefer deeper water, but these large fish can still be found in shallow water throughout the summer.
In clear lakes, some fishermen have success fishing for muskie at night. Pike fishing at night is poor, but muskie anglers catch lots of fish with big, noisy top water lures. Fishing is best during the full moon because there is more light penetrating through the water.
