During a severe cold front, you will have to fish up to 10 feet deeper during the morning and afternoon. More sunlight will penetrate through the water forcing fish deeper. In late afternoon through the evening, the water in the shallows is the warmest, so you can find a straggler every so often in the shallows. Slow down with your presentations with deep-diving crankbaits, carolina-rigged soft plastics, and swimbaits. Don’t expect the pike to chase your lure. You have to present your lure right in front of them. Carolina rigs with live chubs are excellent for catching pike after a cold front.
During even a mild cold front, muskie fishing becomes very tough. After a severe cold front, you are better off taking the day off from fishing. If you determined to catch muskie after a cold front, slow down, fish deeper and try big, live chubs. You should always have a bait rod set up with some chubs, small perch, or other bait fish. When you do get a muskie to follow your lure to the boat, flipping a live fish out there will catch more fish than the figure 8.
