Largemouth Bass and Structure

Structure means a change in the lake bottom.  It's that simple.  Finding
structure is the key to finding and catching largemouth bass.  Think of
the structure as roads to different areas.  Bass will take different roads
to get to their favorite places.  If they want to go for something fast,
they will go to the shallows and grab a minnow or bluegill.

If they are looking for something more specific, they might take another
road to their favorite underwater hump that provides some crayfish
along the rocks.  It is often said that 90% of fish are in 10% of the
water.  Bass might have to take a road to get to their favorite place to
eat or just hang out.  That is like us jumping in the car to go to a
restaurant.  If someone could throw a hamburger through your window,
you'd probably eat it, but you're not likely to stop until you get to the
restaurant.  Once you get there, you're going to hang out for a while.
Fish use the underwater structure the same way.  They swim along a
stretch of water to get to their favorite places and they stay in those
places for a longer period of time.  It doesn't matter if those places are
creek channels, shallow flats, a deep hole, sunken island, a weed edge
or a stump.  The point is that they spend most of their time on these
specific places and they use the rest of the water as their underwater
highway to get to these places.  If you can find out when they hang out
in the different types of structure, you will catch more bass.

The quickest and easiest way to locate structure is to use a fish finder.
Use it to locate flats, drop-offs, creek channels, humps, and more.  If
you can figure out when the bass come into these different types of
structure, you will have your best chance for catching fish.  The best
fishermen know what type of structure bass like to feed around.
Suspended bass 20 feet deep in open water are very hard to catch.
On the other hand, bass in 8 to 12 feet with weeds are much easier to
catch during the morning and evening when bass are feeding.  Locate
the structure, find out what types of structure they feed around, and
what time they feed on that structure and you will be a better bass
fishermen.
