Largemouth Bass in Ponds

Most bass fishermen fish ponds and if they don't, they are missing out
on some exciting fishing.  Ponds are great for getting new anglers into
the sport, but they can also produce some very big bass.  The best
ponds have light to moderate weed growth with a good supply of
sunfish.

Bass need a source of bait fish to feed on and sunfish are usually the
main source of food for bass in ponds.  If you find a pond that has too
many sunfish, the pond will most likely not have too many bass.  These
sunfish are all over the bass spawning beds trying to feed.  This
prevents bass from reproducing.  Finding the right balance of bait fish
and bass can lead to some exciting fishing.

Fishing ponds is best in spring and fall, however, you can catch a lot of
bass along the shallows during the summer if you fish early morning
and late evening.  Bass are usually close to the shoreline in ponds.
They feed on the sunfish and the sunfish stay shallow, so the bass will
hang out in water just a little deeper so they don't have to go far for a
meal.  During the middle of the day in the summer, bass will be deep
because the shallows warm up so fast.  They are much harder to catch
in deeper water.  Remember that most bass feed in the shallows, so
your best chance is to catch them in the shallows.

Ponds can be fished out very quickly when anglers are keeping bass.
Even the best ponds can be ruined in a few short weeks of fishermen
keeping whatever they catch.  Ponds can only hold so many bass.
Catch and release is recommended in ponds.  When you do find that
pond that offers unbelievable fishing, try to keep it a secret.  With some
ponds, it only takes one person keeping fish to ruin a pond.   The more
people you tell, the less likely that pond will produce quality fishing in
the future.
