Catching Largemouth Bass and Clear Water

Catching bass in clear water provides one of the biggest challenges to
bass fishermen.  In some clear lakes, you can see bass 20 feet down.
If you can see them, you know they can see you.  You are going to
have to make some adjustments if you want to consistently catch
largemouth bass in clear water.

On sunny days, bass will go very deep or hang around cover that
provides shade.  If you can't catch them around cover throughout the
day, you know that you have to fish in the morning, evening or at night.
You don't want to have to search for the bass that are suspended in
deep water.  It will take too much time and most of the time you will go
home skunked.  This doesn't mean that you can't catch a limit of big
bass suspended in deeper water.  We're just saying that on sunny
days, it can be very tough targeting suspended bass in clear water.
Most anglers will have a tough time on the water under these
conditions.  Try targeting bass early in the morning, during the evening
or at night.  Clear lakes provide some of their best fishing opportunities
at night.  If you can get on the water during a cloudy day, it will increase
your odds tremendously when fishing clear water.

Most successful anglers use light line,
live bait or very fast retrieves
with their lures.  Light line and live bait will produce fish.  If you prefer
using
lures, try faster retrieves so the fish don't have enough time to
see that your lure is not real.
Crankbaits, spinnerbaits and swimbaits
work well in clear water.
