Spawning Crappie

This is by far the best time of year to catch crappie.  As
the water temperature hits 60 degrees, you can expect to
start seeing crappie shallow as they begin their spawn.
Males will come in first to build the nests.  While catching
spawning crappie can be extremely easy, you still need to
know how to present your baits effectively.  Crappie
spook very easy so light line and tackle is essential.

Also, some anglers make the mistake of positioning their boat too close to the beds.  This spooks the fish and drives them off the beds.  The most
successful anglers will find lots of good areas that hold spawning crappie and they will mark them.  Once they have all their spots marked, they go back
and fish these areas.  This way, they know exactly where the spot is and they can keep their distance to avoid spooking the fish.

One you are on the fish, positioning your bait becomes the most important thing.  You need to have your bait right on the nest.  Crappie don't scatter far
from their nest, so you must get your bait on or very close to the nest to catch fish.  A bobber and minnow will work extremely well if you can get it in the
beds.  Other anglers prefer using all types of panfish lures so they can keep their baits moving throughout the spawning area.  This allows them to stay
farther away from the nest and cover lots of water that holds spawning crappies.
