Basic Crappie Fishing Techniques
In the spring, catching crappie couldn't be any easier. They can be
targeted along the shoreline near any type of timber or brush. If you
don't find any brush, other types of cover will work as well. You can
find crappie near weeds, boat docks, rocky shorelines and most other
types of cover. Crappie will spook easier than other panfish so make
sure not to make too much noise as you approach a nearby tree or
boat dock. In the spring, crappie are very easy to catch with a variety
of small jigs, tubes, spinners and minnows. All of the typical panfish
lures will work for crappie in the spring. Some anglers prefer using
minnows. Lures and bait will work to catch boat loads of spring
crappie. Catching fish can be as simple as using a bobber and
minnow around shallow cover. For anglers that like to cover some
water, a jig tipped with a minnow will produce lots of crappies and you
can work the areas fairly quickly.
During the summer, anglers will use the same baits, but they will target
these fish in open water. Since crappies are suspended, using your
fish finder will help you find the fish. Once you find these deep fish,
you must use some weight to get your bait into deeper water. Vertical
jigging and drifting in these areas is very productive. Some anglers
like to set up their lines with 2 hooks so they can rig 2 minnows on their
line to boost their chances.
