Catching Catfish

When fishing for catfish, you will use different types of baits than you
would for most other fish.  Catfish mostly feed around the bottom and
they have a great sense of smell.
Scented baits are very effective,
such as: stink baits, dough baits, and home made baits that smell
horrible work well for all types of catfish.

Other baits that are good are cut bait, live bluegill or suckers, cheese,
worms and crayfish.  There are tons of home made stink baits as well
as manufactured stink baits.  Most anglers believe there stink bait is
way better than the rest, but in reality, most stinkbaits will all catch
catfish.  Blue catfish and channel catfish like stink baits more than the
other catfish.  You can catch all types of catfish on each different bait,
however, flatheads are caught more on live bait.  Anglers will use
bluegill, chubs, suckers or any other type of live bait fish.  Big flatheads
prefer a huge sucker or large bluegill over stink baits.  Remember that
stink baits typically catch smaller fish and live baits along with cut baits
usually produce bigger fish.

Heavier tackle is recommended for catfish.  At any given time, you
could hook into a monster catfish and you'll need heavy tackle to get
the fish in the boat.  A weight, hook and your bait is all you need to
catch catfish.  In current, you're going to want heavier weights to keep
your bait on the bottom.  In ponds or small lakes, you might want to use
heavier weights so you can cast your bait farther.  For suspended
catfish in lakes,
slip bobbers produce good results.  You can also use a
bobber for floating your bait downstream in rivers.  This works well for
active catfish and you get to cover a lot more water.
