African Pompano

    The African pompano is not
    a pompano, but rather a
    member of the threadfin
    family.  The African
    pompano is found in the
south Atlantic and Gulf coast.  It has a Pacific coast
counterpart, which is the Pacific threadfin.

The African pompano can grow as large as 35 pounds or
more.  They are very strong and they make powerful runs
towards the bottom once they are hooked. African
pompano are very exciting to catch.  These fish love to
hang out near the reefs especially in Florida and the
    Bahamas.

    Catching African Pompano

African Pompano love to hang out around reefs and
wrecks.  Chumming over these areas is very effective.  Try
using small bait fish, squid or prawn.  Small jigs will also
work over the reefs and wrecks.  They will strike your bait
quickly and try to run into the wrecks.  Make sure you have
heavy enough tackle to pull these fish up towards the boat
    quickly to avoid the snags.
