Surf Fishing is a good way to catch a variety of saltwater species. It
can be a lot of fun and it might be your only option to fish the ocean if
you don't have access to a boat. Surf fishing can be experienced from
sandy beaches, rocky beaches, rock jetties and from fishing piers.
Surf Fishing Tackle
If you are looking to get into surf fishing, it is a good idea to get the
proper tackle for your situation. You can get away with your typical
fishing gear for some surf fishing situations, but you will catch more
fish and bigger fish if you are equipped with the correct fishing tackle.
The typical surf fishing setup consists of an 8 or 9 foot rod and reel
with 14 to 20 pound test line. The area you are fishing and the
species you are targeting will dictate what you should use. If you are
fishing sandy beaches, longer rods work well for making long casts
and keeping your line above the incoming waves. If the waves are
small (1 to 2 feet) along the beach, a shorter rod can get the job done.
If you are fishing from rocks or jetties, you can probably get away with
a shorter rod as well.
