Fishing
The Root River is well known throughout the midwest. There is a
Root River Steelhead Facility that is used by the Wisconsin
Department of Natural Resources. The facility helps the DNR
manage Lake Michigan's trout and salmon fishery more
effectively. There are good runs of Chinook and Coho every
fall. Steelhead and Brown Trout can also be caught during the
spring and fall. For anglers that are willing to deal with the cold
temperatures, brown trout and steelhead can be caught very
late in the year with good reports coming in November. It is
common to see around 10,000 Chinook pass through the weir
during the fall spawning run. The downside of fishing the Root
River is that there are a lot of anglers on the river. There will be
crowds on the weekends and some weekdays aren't much better
either.
Lake Michigan provides some excellent fishing from May through
November. In May and June, the coho fishing is very good.
Coho are close to the shorelines and many boats enjoy catching
their limits. In the summer, Chinook and Steelhead are the
primary targets. Once the water cools in the fall, chinook and
coho are very close to the shores. Boaters stay close, shore
fishermen have a lot of success and the river fishermen have a
blast once the fish make their run up the Root River to spawn.
Good reports of Brown Trout are reported early and late in the
year.
Racine is located in the southeastern
part of Wisconsin just north of
Kenosha. Thousands of anglers come
to this area to fish Lake Michigan and
the Root River.
