The state of Wisconsin has a passion for ice fishing. There are so many places to fish when it comes to Wisconsin. We put together a list of Wisconsin's most popular fishing destinations and it doesn't change that much for ice fishing. Most of the places that provide excellent fishing during the open water season will also produce during the winter months. One major difference will be that the bigger lakes will be off limits until later in the season. Shallow lakes freeze first, so you want to target the best shallow lakes in your area first. Another thing that changes with ice fishing is that anglers will target certain species more than during the open water season. Late fall might be the best time of the year to catch huge muskie and lunker smallmouth bass, but once ice fishing starts up, anglers turn to walleye, northern pike, perch, bluegill and crappie for the most part. These species are easier to catch through the ice.
