Fox River's Chain O' Lakes consists of 9 major lakes that are connected by a series of
small waterways, which allows boats to travel between lakes. The Chain O' Lakes are
located about 60 miles from Chicago just south of the Illinois/Wisconsin Border in Lake
County and McHenry County.
The Fox Chain is very popular for boating and fishing. Boaters can be found all over
these lakes during the summer. The lakes are fairly shallow, averaging around 10 feet
deep. The 9 major lakes are Fox, Marie, Catherine, Channel, Nippersink, Pistakee,
Grass, Bluff and Petite Lakes. The lakes are fed by the Fox River.
Fishing is popular for a variety of species on the chain. Most anglers target walleye,
largemouth bass and catfish, but there are also muskie, crappie, white bass, yellow
bass, carp and bluegill. If you are planning a fishing trip to the Fox Chain of Lakes,
make sure you fish during the spring, fall, weekdays or early in the morning on the
weekends. The lake will be very crowded in the summer and the recreational boaters
get started early and stay out late.
