To fish for big fish you must first know where they are. Be it seeing them and sight fishing to them or just knowing
that they are there and fishing for them. Most fishers catch a big fish by accident as they are just fishing and in
happenstance manage to get a strike from a BIG FISH.
The technique I use for BIG FISHING involves the use of a boat. A boat gives height and therefore a better angle
to see the fish as well as a mode of transport to the Big Fish spots.
Brown trout hang out in pods (schools) in various sections of the White River. Some holes hold many pods and
some holes hold few if any pods. Because of my knowledge of the river gained by doing float trips I use a
different technique than most flyfishing guides. I like to hit and sight fish to pods of fish. Pods of 5 or 6 and up to
30 fish will school together in a pod. A pod of fish will not spook quite as easily as a single fish and if enough
pods are hit we can usually find a fish that will strike a fly.
Some days it takes all day to get a strike from a BIG FISH and some days a strike can be had multiple times from
the same pod. I use this technique on no generation days because it greatly increases the odds of finding a Big
Fish or a brown trout that will take a fly. While fishing these pods your definition of a BIG FISH will come into
focus. Because you can see the fish and the different sizes in the same pod suddenly they are all big fish and
you want one of them. Preferably the biggest one of the bunch but you'd take anyone of them. When you catch
it it IS a big fish. Mabey not the biggest but a BIG one. When you catch one bigger that is the BIG FISH and the
one before is not so big.
On higher water streamer fishing or fishing with flys under an indicator or even big dry flies can be very
productive. At different water levels bigger fish will move with the volume of water up the bank and down on the
bottom. Up the bank is much easier to catch on higher volumes of water than trying to get down on the bottom of
the river but sometimes the bottom fish are the ones feeding and thats where you need to be. I will not go into
detail on this technique. However streamer fishing from a boat can be productive if the water and the volume of
water is worked correctly.
