Wheeler Lake is located in north central Alabama half way between Birmingham and
Nashville.  It is Alabama's second largest Lake which stretches 60 miles from
Guntersville Dam to Wheeler Dam near Rogersville.  The middle section has many
creek channels, weed beds and stump flats to fish.  The lower end has a lot of steep
banks and points that are prime locations for fishing.

Fishing:    Bass fishing is the most popular fishery on this lake.  Largemouth bass are
the primary species, however, smallmouth bass are very common from Decatur to the
west end, especially from Elk River down.  Spotted bass are available also, but they are
mostly caught near the main channel.

There are many other types of fish species in Wheeler Lake.  Crappie grow extremely
fast, sauger can be caught during their run upstream to the Guntersville Dam in late
winter and early spring.  There are striped bass, white bass, and hybrids that also make
spring runs up to the dam.  Bream (bluegill, redear) fishing is very good also.  Catfish
on Wheeler Lake is excellent with a previous world record blue catfish caught in 1996.
This fish weighed 111 pounds and was caught by William McKinley.
