| Spinnerbaits one of the preferred search baits for bass fishermen. They catch a variety of species and are very easy to use. The shaft of a spinnerbait allows the bait to work through cover such as lily pads, wood and even some types of weeds. Any time you can get a spinner into some cover, you have a great chance of catching a fish. How To Use Spinnerbaits Spinnerbaits are used as a search bait in shallow water. Most often, a steady retrieve a couple of feet below the surface is all you need to catch fish. You can also retrieve it slowly along the bottom, fast so it boils the surface, with a stop and go retrieve, or vertically, like a jig, around cover. All methods work, you just have to figure out what technique will work best for that given day. Where To Use Spinnerbaits Spinnerbaits are best when used as a search bait in shallow water. You will have success casting along weed lines, in and around lily pads, along shorelines, standing timber and any other shallow water cover. Types of Fish Caught on Spinnerbaits Bass and pike are caught most consistently on spinnerbaits. These fish like to hang out in shallow cover and these lures work best in shallow cover. Muskie also like to hit spinnerbaits and you can catch other species, just not as often as you will catch bass and pike. Problems With Using Spinnerbaits Some fishermen don't know when to switch lures. Spinnerbaits are a great search bait, but sometimes fish will follow up a spinnerbait or just miss a spinnerbait. If you see this 2 or 3 times, you need to slow down with a jig or some type of soft plastic. The spinnerbait did the work and found fish for you. It just might not be the best choice for today. Slow down, change baits and you will most likely catch those fish that weren't aggressive enough to take down that spinnerbait. |
