| Minnow Plugs are similar to crankbaits, but they are shaped as a minnow. They are long and lean compared to their shorter and fatter counterparts: shallow and deep crankbaits. Minnow plugs will run at varying depths. Some have longer lips than others. Minnow plugs have an excelling wobbling action and most do have rattles built inside which adds to their appeal. Minnow plugs are a great bait for a variety of species. How To Use Minnow Plugs You can use minnow plugs in a variety of ways. Casting and trolling are both very effective. A steady retrieve works best. This allows the lure to do the work for you. They have great action and most have rattles, which makes it easier to use for the angler. The conditions will dictate how you retrieve these lures. In warmer water, you can wind these lures in fairly fast and the fish will crush them. In cooler water, a slower retrieve works best. Some anglers like using the stop and go retrieve over structure. Many fish will hit the lure as it pauses. Where To Use Minnow Plugs You can cast them in open water, shallow water, deep water and trolling also works well. They are a fantastic search bait and they appeal more to fish that prefer eating longer bait fish, such as northern pike and walleye. Most anglers prefer using these baits along a weed line or along a drop-off. Types of Fish Caught on Minnow Plugs The most common fish caught with minnow plugs are walleye, northern pike, bass, salmon, trout, and muskie. Walleye and pike love minnow plugs because they imitate a long, lean bait fish, similar to perch. Every type of species that hits a minnow will hit a minnow plug. Fishermen using minnow plugs for walleye will catch some perch, rock bass and even an occasional big bluegill will try to hit this lure, but you will most likely catch pike, walleye, and bass. Problems With Using Minnow Plugs Anglers will often use these lures in water that is too shallow and the lures will keep running through the weeds. Make sure you know what depth your minnow plugs will run at and fish those depths accordingly. Every minute you spend bringing the lure in to take weed off is one less minute your lure is out of the striking zone. |
