Fishing Rods:  Most fishing rods today are made of
fiberglass, graphite, or a combination of both.  Fiberglass
has been around longer, but both make good rods and
they have qualities that make them different.  Rods are
made by wrapping a very thick sheet of long fibers or
fiberglass or graphite material around a tapered dowel.
The fibers run the entire length of the rod and the sheet is
held together by glue.  It takes several layers to make the
rod and it must be finished with a coating to make the rod
smooth.  When this is completed, the dowel is removed
and you have a rod blank.  More fibers make the rod
stronger, while less fibers make the rod weaker.
Fiberglass rods are more flexible and weaker for catching
fish, however they will usually hold up better and last
longer than graphite rods.  Graphite rods are lighter and
stronger making them a favorite for fishermen going after
big fish.  They can have a light rod that is very strong.
Their weakness is that they are also brittle and are more
susceptible to breaking.

There are a few different types of rods on the market
today.  There are spin-casting rods, spinning rods,
bait-casting rods, and fly rods.  They vary in prices and it
is better to buy a quality rod because it will make a huge
difference in landing fish and it will last a lot longer than a
cheap rod.  However, there are many fisherman that fish
with the lower end tackle and you can still catch some
impressive fish.  You get what you pay for just like any
other product.  Higher quality rods can easily last 10 years
or longer if you take care of them.  Now, let's take a look at
the different types of rods.

A typical
spin-casting rod is shorter, more flexible and is
best equipped with a reel that handles 4 to 8 pound test
line.  These rods are great for beginning anglers.  It is
recommended to use these rods for panfish and small
trout.  If you are fishing for bass with these rods, you will
more than likely be coming home talking about the big one
that got away.

Spinning rods are a favorite for most anglers.  There is a
wide range of spinning rods.  The average rod is 6 to 7
feet, but there are also some ultra-light rods that are
shorter.  On the other end, rods made for surf fishing can
be over 12 feet long.  These rods are comfortable, easy to
use and they can handle some huge fish.  The reels that
go with spinning rods are best when using 4 to 12 pound
test.  On bigger reels, you can easily use 17 to 20 pound
test, but more heavier lines, bait-casting rods are
recommended.  The quality of these rods can range from
a cheap toy to a heavy-duty salmon rod.  Make sure not to
just buy the cheapest rod because you will lose way too
many fish and probably have to replace the rod after it
breaks in a year or two.

Bait-casting rods are the rods that you will see in
professional bass tournaments.  The rods are longer,
heavier and stronger for handling big fish.  The reels that
go will bait-casting rods are great for handling very heavy
line.  You can have 65 pound test line on your reel and
cast a topwater frog a very long ways.  Bass fishermen
love these rods because they are so good for casting long
distances and when they get a hit, they can rip that bass
to the boat in a hurry because of the heavy line and
strong rod.

Fly fishing rods are very unique just like the fishermen that
use fly rods.  Fly-fishing is definitely an art that takes lots
of time, practice, and most of all, patience.  The rods can
be made of fiberglass, graphite, or bamboo.  The rods are
very long and more flexible.  Fly rods are actually casting
the line, not the lure.  These rods range in quality from
inexpensive for the beginner to very expensive for the
seasoned fly-fishermen or collector.  When selecting a fly
rod, make sure that you find a rod that is comfortable
because you will be doing a lot more work with a fly rod
than you will with any other type of fishing rod.
