Fishing Reels:  There are 4 different styles of fishing
reels: fly reels, bait-casting reels, spinning reels, and
spin-casting reels.  They are all used for different
situations.

Spin-casting reels are most common for young fishermen.
Most fishermen used these types of reels when they were
kids.  They are usually cheap and inexpensive combined
with a cheap and inexpensive rod.  If your kid breaks the
rod or accidentally throws it over the boat, it's not going to
ruin your whole day.  These reels have a push-button to
make casting very easy for younger anglers.  These reels
handle 4 to 8 pound test very well and were made for
catching panfish and small trout.

Spinning reels are probably the most common reel on the
market today.  They are great for most fishing situations.
There are spinning reels of all different sizes.  You can
use 4 pound test on an ultra-light rod for crappie or 20
pound test on a heavy rod for salmon.  Most spinning
reels are best equipped for 4 to 12 pound test, however,
some of the bigger reels can handle 17 to 20 pound test
without a problem.  If you are looking to go heavier than
that, you should probably take a look at the bait-casting
reels.

Bait-casting reels are the preferred reel for bass, pike,
and muskie fishermen.  These reels can have 65 pound
test line and cast a very long way.  Bass fishermen loves
these rods because they are so good for casting long
distances and it helps them cover a lot of water and also
to rip a fish into the boat in a hurry.  Pike and muskie
fishermen love bait-casting reels also.  These reels are
just great for heavy line and most bait-casting rods are
heavy duty making them a great combination for catching
big fish on lures.

Fly reels are unique.  Every other reel is made for casting
the line, however, fly reels are made for holding the line.
You strip line from the reel with your hand and use the rod
to cast the line.  You don't even touch the reel while
casting with a fly rod.  Fly reels range in quality and in
price and you definitely get what you pay for.  If you are
fishing for small fish, you can get a quality reel for a price
that won't deplete your bank account.  If you are going
after big salmon or big saltwater game fish, you are going
to spend a lot of money for a quality reel.  If you invest in
a good reel, take care of it and it will last you many years.
