Kayak Fishing
Kayak fishing is growing in popularity, although it is still just a small niche
in the overall sport of fishing.  Fishing from a kayak is a lot of fun for
anglers that enjoy getting away from the crowds.  Most kayak fishermen
use their kayak to fish saltwater marshes, shallow bays and inlets.  They
are great for fishing shallow water and you usually won’t find any other
boats in the areas that you find kayak fishermen.  Some of the popular
fish that kayak saltwater anglers target are
redfish, flounder, sea trout,
black drum, striped bass and snook.

There are plenty of kayak fishermen that use their kayaks for
bass,
northern pike, panfish and other freshwater fish.  In Ely,
Minnesota, canoes and kayaks are used for fishing the many miles of
boundary waters.  There are plenty of outfitters that can help you catch
some trophy
smallmouth bass and northern pike.  In Ely, they also catch
walleye and lake trout.  Many kayak anglers get their start in local
ponds.  It can be a fun way to get accustomed to the kayak and you can
fish some areas of ponds that never get fished.  Some trophy
bass and
bluegill are caught from kayaks in all kinds of ponds.

Kayak Fishing Tips

  • Know the Tides – The tides can change the depth up to 6 feet in
some backwater areas.  Make sure you know what times the tides
will change.  If you don’t pay attention to the tides, you can end up
getting stranded as the water recedes.  You can also plan your trip
based on the tides to make it easier on you for paddling.  If you
are paddling with the tides, you will end up saving some time and
    energy.

  • Trolling – You will be spending so much time paddling that you
might as well throw a line out as you are paddling to your fishing
spot.  Many lures will work well when trolled fast.  Crankbaits,
topwater baits and other minnow-type baits can produce a quality
fish before you even get to your actual fishing spot.

  • Safety – Make sure to wear your personal flotation device.  It can
save your life.  Choose bright colors when you buy your kayak.
Bright colors stand out and it will help people notice you if anything
goes wrong.  Get your local weather forecast.  Keep your
valuables in a waterproof bag or container that floats.  Kayaking
can be very strenuous, so it is smart to get a check-up with your
doctor to make sure you don't have any health risks.

  • Paddle Leash – Buy or make a paddle leash that connects your
paddle to the kayak.  If you drop your paddle in the water, you don’
t have to worry about losing it.  Just pull the leash back in and
    recover your paddle.
