Cobia, kingfish, gag grouper and red grouper have been caught offshore from 40 to 100 feet deep out of Madeira Beach.  Tarpon and snook are active around John’s Pass with snook on the beaches as well.  The Fort DeSoto Park offers trout, snook and tarpon.  The Skyway Pier has plenty of good sized trout around as well as lots of spanish mackerel.

Reports from Anna Maria have been good for snook and tarpon along the beaches.  The upper part of Sarasota Bay has been productive for trout and redfish.  High tides are pushing fish into the mangroves.  Heavy tackle will help you get fish out of the snags and into the boat.

Many anglers are targeting a variety of different species in the St. Petersburg area.  Spanish mackerel, bluefish, flounder and shark are just some of the fish that anglers are catching.

South Indian River Fishing Report 5/28

May 28, 2009

Aside from the usual rainy weather we have had lately, the mornings have provided some great fishing opportunities for anglers throughout the Treasure Coast.  As the close of snook season fast approaches, you can find lots of fishermen out trying for that last chance at a slot snook.  It has been a fantastic week for fishing around the area.

The redfish bite picked up this week with some nice sized fish being taken on the flats.  Mike Lasorik and his dad joined me again this year and enjoyed a day catching four redfish up to 28 1/2 inches along with some trout and jacks around the river.  Wayne Foisy was out with me also this week and caught his first redfish that also measured 28 1/2 inches.  Live bait or DOA TerrorEyz have worked well on redfish.  We also boated snook, jacks and a nice flounder that also were fooled by the reliable TerrorEyz.  Bob Bergen phoned me just after he had lost one of the biggest reds that he has seen on the flats here.  It’s been a good week!

The snook bite has been fantastic around the spillways.  They have been crowded with anglers and lots of oversize fish are being caught.  DOA TerrorEyz and live bait are very popular right now.  Snook season closes May 31st, so time is running short for catching a keeper fish.  Trout are still being caught around the flats.  Harbor Branch, Round Island and the Power Plant have been good areas to target.  DOA Deadly Combos continue to put trout in the boat.

Lots of dolphin are still being taken anywhere from 150′ out.  Many big fish are being reported by almost anyone out trolling ballyhoo.  May has turned out to give us some fantastic fishing adventures and it should only get better as the weather cooperates.  Have some fun and get out fishing!

Tip of the Week:

The water has remained quite clean on the flats, even with all the rain.  Clear water provides fish with much better vision and they can become skittish in these conditions.  Keeping things quiet can increase your chances on the flats.  Fish in shallow water are already nervous about being there and they run for deeper water at the first sign of anything out of the norm.  Keep the noise down and you can improve your catches on the flats.

As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby….it’s an ADVENTURE!!

Good Fishing and Be Safe,

East Central May Fishing Report - May 28, 2009

The East Central part of Florida has some excellent fishing going on right now.  There have been some very high winds over the past couple of weeks, but the fishing is still very good.  Offshore anglers have been targeting dolphin (mahi-mahi) throughout the entire Atlantic Coast of Florida.  Wahoo, blackfin tuna and sailfish have also been reported in the offshore waters through the East Central parts of Florida.

The surf fishing has been tough from the high winds and dirty water, but as the water clears up, anglers can find whiting, pompano and bluefish.

Inshore anglers that are targeting the Banana and Indian rivers have turned to the residential canals of Merritt Island, Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach.  Snook, redfish and trout have been the key species to catch in these waters.

The Sebastian Inlet has been slow due to the high winds, but anglers are still targeting redfish and snook here.  Some tarpon should show up in the upcoming weeks as well.

The saltwater fishing has been tough in the surrounding area.  Anglers targeted redfish, whiting, cobia, sharks and more around the inshore waters just north of the St. John’s River.  South of the river, fishing has also been spotty with all of the freshwater runoff.  Although, there have been some positive reports about the river mouth for flounder.

The offshore fishing has been ok for bottom anglers.  Bottom fishermen are catching snapper and other species out of Fernandina Beach, Mayport and St. Augustine.  There have been some reports of cobia and grouper offshore as well.

The surf and pier fishing has been slow because of the dirty water, however, the catfish and sharks are around.  Whiting, bluefish and redfish have all been slow because of the dirty water.  Find some cleaner water away from the inlets and you may have better success.

Pensacola Report - May 28

The fishing in the Pensacola area has been very good.  Some anglers are reporting very good catches of flounder, while others are having trouble catching them.  It seems like if you can find the flounder, you will have a good chance of catching lots of them.  The speckled trout bite has been very hot on a variety of baits.  Anglers have also been doing well with the redfish in Pensacola Pass and in the Santa Rosa Sound.

Offshore:  Wahoo, dolphin, tuna, billfish and amberjack have been good.

The fishing off of the Pensacola Beach Gulf Fishing Pier has been ok with some good catches of kingfish.  Ladyfish and spanish mackerel are also around.  Warmer weather should help the fishing pick up off of the pier.

Tampa Bay Area Redfish Move Into The Mangroves During High Tides

May 28, 2009 by admin · Comments Off

The high tides of summer are sending redfish into the mangroves to feed.  Anglers can do very well fishing the mangroves with live baits or artificials.  Find the schools of redfish and you’ll have a blast.  Make sure you’re using heavy tackle because you will need to pull these fish out of the mangroves.  Light line will lead to many snags and breakoffs.
