Key West Shore (Surf) Fishing Spots

Shore fishing is very limited in Key West. The best case scenario is to get out in a boat, whether it be your own, a rental boat or even renting a kayak for some fishing near the shore.

If you do choose to fish from shore, there really aren’t too many options to catch quality fish.

The White Street Pier is located in Key West and fishing is allowed there. Snapper, sharks, snook and more are caught from this pier.

Some other options are to fish some of the bridges that are located throughout the lower keys. Check out the bridges for signs that show you where you can park or if you can fish from the bridge.

Wahoo can be caught in the offshore waters of Key West.  Wahoo are a popular species to go after when deep sea fishing.  Trolling ballyhoo and artificial lures will work well for wahoo, while many anglers prefer free-lining live bait for these fish.  Either way, there are plenty of wahoo available to catch in Key West.

    Tarpon fishing is excellent in the Key West area.  Tarpon may be the most popular fish to target in Key West.  Sight fishing for them on the flats can be a lot of fun.  The spring is the best time to plan a trip for tarpon, although, you can catch tarpon throughout the summer and early fall.  Baby tarpon tend to stay shallow most of the year, which gives you something to go after.  Baby tarpon on light tackle can be a lot of fun also, especially for younger anglers.

    Permit fishing in Key West can be a blast.  Spring is a great time to be here for permit.  You can fish them with live bait or artificials.  Fly fishing for permit is a challenge that many anglers come all the way down to Key West to experience.  Permit will be eating shrimp and crabs off of the flats.  Get a live shrimp or crab in front of their face and they are most likely going to eat it.  If you want to catch them on artificials, just throw lures that imitate crabs and shrimp.  Jigs work well.

    Sailfish are an exciting offshore fish that many people love to come down to Key West to catch.  Sailfish start to really turn on in the spring as they migrate through the waters around Key West.  Top water lures are good baits this time of year.  There are many fishing charters around to help you catch one of these big, exciting fish.  They can be caught throughout most of the year, although, the spring seems to be the best time for them.

    Shark fishing can be extremely exciting in Key West.  There are many species of shark that can be caught in shallow water.  We’re talking about water 10 feet deep or less, which means you get to sight fish for sharks at times.  Sharks can also be found in deeper water as well.

    Alive or dead, sharks will eat just about anything.  The more blood the better when it comes to shark fishing.  A good chum slick will help draw them into your boat.  Then go ahead and present your bait and hold on.

    Some of the sharks caught here are blacktip sharks, bonnet head sharks, bull sharks, hammerhead sharks, lemon sharks, spinner sharks and nurse sharks.

    Snapper are excellent eating and they can be caught in the inshore waters around Key West.  Snapper are available year round and they can be caught with many types of live baits and cut baits.  Some of the snapper that are swimming in these waters are gray, mutton, mangrove and yellowtail snapper.

    The best time for catching king mackerel in Key West is during the winter months through spring time.  King mackerel are very strong fish and they can be caught by using live baits such as blue runners or pilchards.  Some good artificial lures for king mackerel are spoons, jigs and plugs.  Trolling is also very common for catching king mackerel.

    Grouper are often overshadowed by many other species that are available down here in Key West.  Just because grouper aren’t talked about as much in Key West doesn’t mean that there isn’t some outstanding fishing for them here.  Grouper can be caught year round in Key West and they are found on the wrecks and reefs.  Live bait is typical for catching grouper down here.
