Winter is a great time to fish the keys.  Hardly any people and lots of different fish species.  Fish are still on the flats and there are lots of fish on the wrecks and reefs as well.  From permit, redfish, snook and tarpon to grouper and snapper, there is plenty here to catch in the winter.

Winter probably is the best time to catch the most different species around the Marquesas Keys.  The only problem with all of the different species……what fish do you go after?  Don’t worry.  Most popular saltwater baits and lures will catch a variety of species.

The fall is a great time to fish the Marquesas Keys because many of the tourists are gone and the fishing pressure is down quite a bit.  The reefs and wrecks provide some good fishing at this time of year, but the flats can be real productive.  If you’re looking for smaller tarpon, bonefish and permit, check out the flats on the Marquesas Keys.

Summer calls for hot weather in the Marquesas Keys, but it’s worth dealing with the heat to catch some of the fish that are around.  Tarpon fishing is very good with shark fishing hitting its peak during the summer time.  The shallow reefs, wrecks and flats will hold fish in the summer.  Expect to catch permit, bonefish, snapper and more during this time of year.

Permit are a big, strong and exciting fish to hook up with and the Florida Keys have plenty of them for anglers to catch year round, although, spring and fall are the best times to target permit in the keys.

Some good baits to catch these fish are crabs, shrimp, mollusks and bait fish.  Artificial flies that resemble crabs are the top choice among most fly fishermen that fish for permit.  These flies usually are weighted in the front to imitate a retreating crab heading for cover on the bottom.

Looking To Catch Bonefish in the Keys…Get a Good Guide

A good fishing guide can make all the difference in the Keys.  The water here is skinny (very shallow) and you will need a flats boat with someone that knows how to operate a flats boat in shallow water.

Not only do you need someone in that can get you into the shallows, you need to actually find fish.  The Keys have some excellent bonefish opportunities in the backcountry flats and you can catch them on live bait or with artificials.  Many anglers prefer catching bonefish on the fly, which can be very exciting.

Good boat positioning combined with precise casts will result in some nice bonefish.

If you want to catch a bonefish, the Florida Keys Flats are a great place to do it.  Bonefish are loaded on the flats all summer long.  With a push pole and a good captain (or fishing partner) and some excellent polarized glasses, you can find plenty of bonefish in the backcountry flats of the Keys.

Some good times to target these fish are during the incoming tides.  At times, you can find schools of bonefish tailing and waking in shallower water on the incoming tide.

Some good baits to use for bonefish are live shrimp, crabs and artificial flies.

Bass Fishing in March

Depending on what part of the country you are fishing, March may be a good month to get started bass fishing.  Florida, Texas and California are rolling with big bass being caught regularly in those states by now.  As you start going north, the southern states are warming to the point where most bass will be pre-spawn and they can be caught in a number of ways.

Many bass anglers prefer throwing jigs, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits and crankbaits early in the year.  A bass jig and a suspended jerk bait are a good 1-2 combination.

Fish during warm fronts.  2 to 3 days of warm weather will get bass to start feeding.  Find the warmest warmer and you should find some bass.  The north shores of the lakes and ponds will typically warm the fastest because south winds will push the warmer surface water to the north shore.  Darker water tends to warm quicker than clearer water, so you may want to get out and fish some of those murkier lakes early in the year.
