Summer is over. The kids have gone back to school. Memories of warm, wastrel days on the sand are fading along with the tan.  But wait, fall is here. And for those in the know, it’s a great time to go to the beach. The kids are back in school, which means the crowds are gone, so you have the beach to yourself. And with the crowds gone, you are more likely to find a bargain in lodging.

“Fall is a great time to visit the area, which is transitioning from a fast-paced summer to a more relaxed fall season,” said Herb Malone, president/CEO of the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources recently made some major changes to recreational fishing regulations.

There now is a 10-per-person-per-day limit on flounder — there was no bag limit before — and the size limits on triggerfish and amberjack have gone up. Triggerfish was changed to 14 inches fork length and amberjack to 30 inches fork length to comply with federal regulations that went into effect Aug. 5.

  • With Alabama struggling through a multi-year drought in 2007, many anglers had an idea that the fishing would also suffer.

  • However, according to the Bass Anglers Information Team (B.A.I.T.) report, that assumption was wrong - dead wrong.  Surprising both anglers and fisheries biologists with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division, bass fishing in 2007 was outstanding, according to the tournament reports filed by tournament fishermen from Alabama and bordering states who fish Alabama waters. The report is comprised of 22 lakes

Wind, cold weather and rain are all conspiring against fishermen hoping to hit the water this weekend.  This on top of the dingy water already present all across the Mobile Bay system will make it tough to get fish to bite. The Alabama River is expected to rise nearly 5 feet by Monday, but the Tombigbee doesn’t appear to have been affected as much by Tuesday’s downpour.
