Adapt to the fish for dog-days fillets

Fish do a much better job of adapting to the effects of the dog days of summer than do humans. In order to catch fish this time of year, we have to do a better job of figuring out what they’re doing to beat the heat.

Local guide Scott Jordan told me fishing early and late in the day is still working for him to locate speckled trout in a feeding mood. He has also found even better success by making sure to be fishing his primary spots right around the tide change.

State fishing better than you think

  • With Alabama struggling through a multi-year drought in 2007, many anglers had an idea that the fishing would also suffer.

  • However, according to the Bass Anglers Information Team (B.A.I.T.) report, that assumption was wrong - dead wrong.  Surprising both anglers and fisheries biologists with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division, bass fishing in 2007 was outstanding, according to the tournament reports filed by tournament fishermen from Alabama and bordering states who fish Alabama waters. Conditions not fishing-friendly

Wind, cold weather and rain are all conspiring against fishermen hoping to hit the water this weekend.  This on top of the dingy water already present all across the Mobile Bay system will make it tough to get fish to bite. The Alabama River is expected to rise nearly 5 feet by Monday, but the Tombigbee doesn’t appear to have been affected as much by Tuesday’s downpour.
